Abstract

Halophiles are salt loving organisms thrive in hyper saline environments like salt pans, saltern pond brines, natural salt lakes and have a nearly neutral to slightly alkaline pH. These organisms have low nutritional requirements but shows resistance to high concentration of salt. Halophiles found in all three domains of life; Archaea, Bacteria, and Eukarya and categorized into three groups based on their NaCl requirement (slight (1-3%); moderate (3-15%); and extreme (15-30%)). Due to their existence in high salinity conditions, they provide number of novel elements. One among them is pigment. Halophiles producing pigment has various applications in field of biotechnology such as pharmaceuticals (antimicrobial, anticancer), neutraceuticals (antioxidant) and in food industries. This review provides an overview of habitat of halophiles, best sampling places to isolate halophiles to perform novel research and applications in various areas.
